Russ looked at his watch for the tenth time in as many minutes and decided his head probably explode where he sat if an announcement over the P.A. system told him Miranda’s plane was going to be any later than it already was. The hour and a half between their flights had turned into a two and a half and he leapt to his feet one more hour wait. Time to go check and make sure the expected arrival time of her plane hadn’t slipped yet again.

It hadn’t. She’d be there in twenty minutes. Twenty long minutes.

Half an hour later, when he finally saw her emerge from the Jetway, he sighed in relief. She was wearing a stylish, red winter coat and had gotten her hair cut. It looked silky and curly, and his fingers itched to get into it and feel its texture. She looked good enough to eat. When he waved, she noticed him and waved back, quickening her steps in his direction. When she was a couple of feet away, he stepped forward and pulled her into his arms with a whispered “Miranda.”

She purred into his neck, and they gripped each other hard, not moving until the flow of traffic started crowding them. His arm around her waist, he steered her toward an area with fewer people.

“Oh, Russ—” she started.

But he closed her words with a hard kiss, relearning her lips, reclaiming her as his. They kissed for a long time, until he pulled back to mumble something about getting her luggage so they could go check in at the hotel. Then he left her for a moment to go over to a bunch of people who’d been watching his carry-on for him.

When he returned, Miranda stood in the center of the aisle. He laughed. She hadn’t moved a muscle in his absence. She didn’t look as if she’d even breathed, although if she was still standing upright she must have.

He ushered her into a taxi. “I reserved a suite at the Intercontinental after you said you weren’t familiar with the Kansas City hotels. I stayed there once for a seminar and it’s a nice place.”

She looked vacantly at him.

Russ waved his hand in front of her face. “Miranda? Are you in there?”

She blinked. “Of course. It just feels a little weird, that’s all. Everything seems weird.”

Leaning against the door, he looked at her, trying to discern what was wrong. “How so?”

“Well, when we talked about this, I simply picked out a city midway between us, made reservations, and flew here. Now we’re here, and I realized I know absolutely nothing about this city other than what’s on the Internet, and that’s not like being here. In a few minutes, after we check in, we’re planning on making mad, passionate love for the rest of the night, then doing the same tomorrow, and then flying back to our respective homes.
